Officials in Mississippi's transportationdepartment say the budget is in critical condition, with rising gas
and oil prices putting proposed road projects at risk.
The department is nearly 40 percent over its gas budget. In
addition, drivers are using less gas because of high prices - so
gasoline tax revenue is down $3 million from last year.
The tax is 18 cents a gallon. For the past decade, it has
brought in about $900 million a year.
Meanwhile, asphalt prices have increased significantly - from
about $312 per ton to $512 per ton in the past year.
And prices on items that have to be hauled in - dirt, concrete
and steel - are going up as the cost of fuel continues to soar.
