Bye-bye traditional milk cartons. Hello plastic bottles. Starting Monday, the cartons in Mobile County school cafeterias will be replaced by re-sealable bottles that are designed to keep milk cooler. The school system also says the plastic bottles are also more environmentally friendly than paper cartons. The change is part of the "New Look of School Milk" program, designed to help schools improve packaging and marketing to make milk more appealing. The Southeast United Dairy Industry Association says more than 2,200 schools in the Southeast have converted to plastic bottles. All of Mobile County’s 95 schools will join the program. In a SUDIA news release, Suzanne Yates, director of food services for Mobile County Public Schools, says "it’s a triple score for our district, children will drink more milk, our breakfast and lunch participation will go up and we’ll save money by recycling because we’ll require fewer garbage pickups."
