Churches and charities along the Gulf Coast are struggling to cope with the growing strain and gas prices.
Dauphin Way United Methodist Church delivers meals to those who can't get around.
Because of the high gas prices, a hospital that provides the food has raised its delivery price.
Instead of passing the extra cost onto those who receive the meals, the church is footing the bill.
Fuel prices have also affected the volunteer drivers who pay for their own gas.
"A lot of our drivers are on fixed incomes and so we have talked about providing them with gas cards to help subsidize their gas crunch because we don't want them to quit driving because they love doing it and it just a service we can't we need them for," said Dauphin Way United Methodist Church Meals on Wheels Coordinator Angela Crowley.
There are several meals on wheels programs throughout the Mobile and Baldwin County areas.
At Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, organizers are looking for more volunteer drivers who can spare an hour of their time each week to deliver meals. For contact information call: 251-471-1511 or click on the external web link on the right.
