MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Corrections iscontinuing with its plan to sell off land to raise money for
maintenance and repairs.
Corrections officials have announced that 1,000 acres at the
Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore County are now up for sale.
Five different parcels of land are available there with the
largest totaling 333.5 acres for a minimum bid of $2,368,000.
Lands at Draper have previously been used for livestock and
farming operations but officials say they're no longer productive
and are a financial drain on the department.
The department has already sold more than 3,800 acres at the
Farquhar State Cattle Ranch and its old headquarters in downtown
Montgomery.
Critics opposed the land sales, saying it was unwise for the
state to sell limited capital assets in an attempt to fund more
than $90 million worth of repairs.
