More than a hundred fishermen gathered in Fairhope this weekend to take part in what is described as the fastest-growing watersport in America.

Were talking about kayak fishing. And it's just what the name implies, fishing from a kayak.

The Mobile chapter of the Kayak Fishing Association has grown from just 8 members two years ago to more than a hundred. Organizers say once you've tried it, you're hooked!

If you would like to find out more, just visit their website. The kayakers alternate trips between the eastern and western shores of Mobile Bay.

That was saltwater?  No wonder the bass all looked so flat.

flounderpounder-I thought my post might get a little bite.  Like you probably, I really do appreciate the sport of fishing. I also believe in safety on the water. I also enjoy Kayaking. A bit tricky at first but so cool. I also know how easy it is to flip a Kayak. I also know how easy it is to catch a stingray or a saltwater catfish too. I have hooked many of sharks in Mobile Bay and fish that were too big to land. I have also been caught in Mobile Bay during a sudden wind change and almost lost it all due to the white caps and waves. That was in a 16 ft. deep v with a 30 horse OB. It takes very little wake to lose it with a Kayak. I am sure it is nice reeling in a speck, red or flounder, but I do know how many other dangerious fish are caught in between. It just does not seem to be a safe practice in Mobile Bay because your body is so restricted. A 16 ft. mtr boat is not 100% safe either. Sorry. But if I had to choose. I would take the safer route. Life is too short.

Actually, we are all local to the Bay and Gulf Coast. We fish in the bay, Gulf, Delta, Streams, Lakes, Rivers, and anywhere a boat can go….and ALL of the places that they wish they could get to. Our members catch species such as Kings, Redfish, Bass, Flounder, Bream, Speckled Trout,...and even SHARKS! We don’t need gas powered watercraft to enjoy OUR waters, and have just as much fun as anyone on a boat, if not more. As far as promoting kayak fishing in salt water…you are too late, The kayak has been traced back as far as the earliest inhabitants along the Gulf Coastal Region, and there are as many of us out there as there are in gas powered boats. WE are the fastest growing watersport in the country, especially with costs of fuel and upkeep these days, and we will continue to grow.
You should come out and join us for a day on the water. Who knows…you just might be converted yourself.
Oh, and gators??? They are much more afraid of us than we are of them, just don’t harass them.

Worried about sharks off the beach? I have caught many of shark right where these Kayaks are fishing. Wait to you accidentally hook up to a shark in one of those Kayaks. Kayak fishing was meant for freshwater streams, creeks and lakes. You are just asking for trouble saltwater fishing in a Kayak. Not to mention how quick it goes from calm to white caps in and around the bays. It may look fun but it is just an accident waiting to happen. I would not promote kayak saltwater fishing in these waters. These guys must not be from around here or ever caught big fish in Mobile Bay before. It will take only one incounter with a 12 foot gator or a 5 foot sand shark and these guys will be upgrading to a real boat.
