TOKYO (AP) - Owners of Apple's iPod love hot tunes but something
might be getting a bit too hot.
Japan is investigating a possible defect after one of the
popular digital music players reportedly shot out sparks while
recharging.
An official says Apple informed Japan earlier this month that a
problem in the lithium-ion battery is suspected in the iPod Nano,
model number MA099J/A. The problem surfaced in Japan in January. No
one has been hurt by the music players.
Apple isn't contesting the government statements, but isn't
commenting further.
Japan wants Apple to find out the cause and report back to the
government.
Lithium-ion batteries have been blamed for fires in laptops
recently, leading to massive worldwide recalls.
Japan says 425,000 of the suspected model iPods were shipped
into the country but it's unclear how many made it to stores or
people's homes.
