Congress is one step closer to helping Americans facing foreclosures. Housing Crisis Fix?

It's still got a long way to go, but a
mortgage rescue plan to save hundreds of thousands of homeowners
from foreclosure has inched closer to the finish line.
The Senate voted 76-to-10 to advance the measure. It includes
overhauls of the Federal Housing Administration, Freddie Mac and
Fannie Mae.
A new 300 billion dollar FHA program would help debt-ridden
homeowners to qualify for government-backed refinancing of more
affordable mortgages. But there are a few roadblocks in the form of
so-called ad-ons.
One of them is a proposal by Nevada Republican John Ensign to
attack an 8-billion-dollar package for renewable energy tax breaks.
Still, passage appears likely by the end of the week with enough
votes to override President Bush's promised veto.
The White House has voiced reservations about a
3.9-billion-dollar plan for buying and fixing up foreclosed
properties. Republicans view it as a bailout for lenders who helped
create the mortgage crisis. Democrats counter it's a way to prevent
neighborhood blight.

I think the new jurisdiction is to Snow Rd, the old was to Cody. But I’m not sure they base that on “land miles” or “air miles”, because my husband said he had looked at the jurisdiction map for the PD, and the line actually runs through my sister’s back yard-and they live out Howell’s Ferry, about a mile or so past Snow Rd.

I’ve had the county appraisers go down my street a number of times in the past ! But it might be only every four years or so and then the rest of the times they use their computer generated assessments, I could believe that without any problems. There are alot of tax exempt properties that shouldn’t be that are in the county. I know of two or three right in my area of young people on disability and who are working on the side and paying no property taxes at all and some who are paying property taxes and working and making less than the ones on disability. It’s a can of worms when you start making exceptions. SouthFan1981, I wasn’t questioning your info, just reporting what I found on that site. Don’t be quite so quick to be rude in a response.

roesepetal-I hope it has changed now. In January one of my employees in his 50’s moved in with his 76 year old widowed mother. She had never stopped paying her yearly tax bill. Her son noticed and advised her otherwise. When she applied for the exemption she was not given a refund for the past years she paid when she qualified. One of my neighbours just discovered the same. They are in their seventies. I was under the impression the old MPDJ was about 1/8 mi. before Snow rd. That Winn Dixie Shopping Center was just outside the MPDJ. Thats why folks loved to shop there. Only County and State sales taxes on groceries.

working4u , i believe that was changed about the refunds within the last couple of years, i notice the page is no longer on the website stating the change. i know for a fact my sister in law, was made aware of it by her cpa. she got the refund. she lives in gulfshores, it should be the same over here., but another question, before the city annexed to schillinger rd., when it was still at cody, how many miles was police jurisdiction past cody. i get different answers. just thought maybe you would know.

Folks. Your property appraisal is computer generated. No person comes out to your property to see if your house has been freshly painted or you have put up a privacy fence or cut the grass lately. Your property description-bdrooms,bths,frpl,2cgarg is run against homes with the same size & features in your general area. Age is not an issue. This is where the fair market value comes in. The abandoned house with grass grown up that has the same features and size as the occupied house accross the street reflect equal market value. I have know retired folks that are in their seventies that had no clue until now that they were tax exempted from property tax. No refunds can or will be issued because they did not apply for those past years.
To my knowledge you do not get refunded for past tax payments. If you notice the Mobile County Revenue Department does not advertise these possible exemptions. Gee, I wonder why?

If you can’t hear me, maybe you are deaf… EH? That’s a tax break, too.

DOGGONE IT! If your over 65 you just get out paying state taxes on it. County, School and Municipal taxes still have to be paid.

Have fun sorting it all out. Our neighbor is appraised at 13K less but has the same sq footage, a garage and a carport. Could it be they count landscaping and paint as added value? If invasive, crappy popcorn trees sprouting up all over detracts value, I understand the difference!
While you are asking questions, find out why THEY have TWO homepages and no link from one to the other.

Appreciate it SouthFan, I’ll check it out.
