NEW YORK (AP) - The economy has slowed dramatically. And so hasthe number of people who want high-speed Internet service. The
number of new broadband Internet subscribers in the United States
has fallen. A research company says that number of new
signer-uppers is now at its lowest level in at least seven years.
Leichtman Research Group says the 20 largest cable and telephone
companies added another 887,000 high-speed Internet subscribers in
the three months ending June 30th. That's half the number posted in
the second quarter of 2007. The research group says there are two
main factors leading to the slowdown in new subscribers. One is
saturation of the marketplace. And the other is the lagging
economy.
