LOS ANGELES (AP) - Talk about your battle of the bands.ActiVision is going to court in an attempt to beat back a challenge
by Gibson Guitar Corporation. The instrument maker claims that the
popular video game "Guitar Hero" violates a patent held by
Gibson. Gibson wants ActiVision to stop selling the game until it
gets a license under the patent, granted in 1999. But for its part,
ActiVision says it doesn't want -- or need -- a license under the
patent in question. It claims the patent doesn't apply to the game.
The Gibson patent covers a virtual-reality device that includes a
headset and speakers and that simulated taking part in a concert.
For those unfamiliar with the game, "Guitar Hero" lets users play
songs using a string-less, plastic guitar by following graphics
displayed on a TV connected to a game console. The TV also displays
animated musicians playing along.
