TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Price gougers beware: today GovernorCharlie Crist angrily sounded off on skyrocketing gas prices and
said the state of Florida won't put up with such greed anymore.
The governor appeared with Florida Attorney General Bill
McCollum and Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson to
demonstrate a unified front on the state's mission to crack down on
price gouging, especially when it involves fuel.
McCollum and Bronson have subpoenaed 20 fuel operators to find
out why prices at the pump jumped to more than five dollars a
gallon at some gas stations following rumors of possible fuel
shortages because of Hurricane Ike.
All three state leaders say the state takes price gouging very
seriously and will punish violators to the full extent of the law.
Governor Crist says panic buying caused fuel shortages over the
weekend. Ordinarily, Florida drivers buy about 25 million gallons
of gas a day, but on Friday that number surged to 100 million
gallons.
