TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida Agriculture CommissionerCharles Bronson says soaring gas prices could trigger an economic
catastrophe rivaling the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Bronson said Friday that the Bush Administration and Congress
need to find out why fuel prices have skyrocketed unchecked,
approaching $4 per gallon for regular in Florida over the Memorial
Day weekend.
He said speculators are frantically buying and selling oil
futures and driving up the price, while oil companies are making
massive profits and oil-producing countries are scaling back their
production to push prices even higher.
