CHICAGO (AP) - It's a new life in the ongoing metamorphosis ofNapster. It's gone from an idea launched in a dorm room to the
sworn enemy of the recording industry to a legitimate music seller
to a company that has been bought out by a major electronics
retailer. Napster has been purchased by Best Buy. The price of the
transaction: nearly $127 million. As part of the deal, Best Buy
gets to raise its profile in the digital music selling business. It
will gain access to Napster's 700,000 subscribers who pay a monthly
fee to access digital music catalogs. Best Buy will also end up
with a chunk of the technical expertise about the digital music
industry.
