Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson created a storm of controversy when he decided to spend $9,000 from his 'discretionary fund' on an electronic Moon Pie that will be dropped at on New Years Eve, similar to New York's Waterford Crystal Ball.

As part of the festivities Wednesday night at Cooper Riverside Park in downtown, Chattanooga Bakery Inc. will serve up an edible 55 pound, chocolate Moon Pie.

During today's city council meeting, News 5 got a sneak peak at what the world's largest edible Moon Pie will look like. The bakery used six pounds of chocolate icing and 14 pounds of marshmallows to make the 4-foot wide, 4500-calorie chocolate Moon Pie.

Chattanooga Bakery will also hand out 5,000 of the regular size moon pies.

The moon pie has been the popular throw at Mobile's Mardi Gras since 1974. More than 4 million of them are sold during Mobile’s Mardi Gras season, according to Stephen Toomey, owner of Toomey’s Mardi Gras Candy Company.

All of this talk but is anyone that lives in Mobile going to do anything about this?  I don’t live in Mobile but if it were my tax dollars I would be persuing an investigation.

Don’t you know that moonpie is so fresh its gonna taste wonderful after 3 days? LOL Fred Richardson is as crazy as a looney bird! Anyone who goes downtown to support this is crazy… Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year!

i have often wondered if some of our elected leaders had marshmallows in thier heads.

Did the city bribe the news media?  It looked like the city gave the news people that appear in front of cameras a moonpie baret to wear when they told the news and weather.  I guess this was done so that the news media would make positive comments about the moonpie downtown.  The hats look real silly.  I guess people won’t mind wearing them if they are downtown dancing around in the streets drunk.  Fred Richardson certainly didn’t mind looking like a fool in his hat, did he?  Of course, he has that reputation already. Everyone enjoy your holiday, if you are lucky enough to get one.  I will be working. Drive Safe. Happy New Year

I agree with DEW28M.  The best way to support the county and to show our complete disgust with Fred is to stay away from “the moonpie festival” on New Years Eve.  Fred claims the county will get millions in revenue from his idiocy.  I don’t see them coming close to breaking even. Fred gets 6000 bucks in his pocket and the town gets screwed.  Teachers can’t get paid due to lack of funds, but we can have a moonpie!!  Fred’s priorities are not with the county.  They are with his BANK ACCOUNT.  Can we PLEASE get someone honest into office?

sounds better than pcola, they are gonna drop a gian pelican. what kinda food are they passing out, fish or wings?

I’m starting to worry about Fred.  This moonpie stuff has gone to his head!

DEW26M too funny! but so true!

This looks like a Little Debbie oatmeal cookie that has been decorated to look like a moonpie.  It also has the smushed marshmallow center like the Little Debbie cookie has, too.
