Will speed tables that slow down traffic be removed on a busy street in midtown Mobile?
That's what some people who live along Houston Street are afraid of.
Mobile City Councilman William Carroll said an official with Mayor Sam Jones administration told him at a town meeting Thursday night that the Mobile Fire Department is concerned about the speed tables.
Carroll said, "My first concern would be for the life of any individual that would be on the ambulance or on a fire rescue or paramedic. The time that they get to the hospital is critical."
But people who live along Houston Street said they have safety on their minds, too.
Lynn Durham said, "It keeps people the traffic slow. I can remember when they (cars) used to speed by."
Badia Pappas also lives on Houston Street.
She said, "They know when they come to a speed bump because they see it, and they see the arrows and they slow down."
Wayne Durham said, "There are a lot of people who do a lot of walking and jogging like children on the street now that weren't here probably years ago."
Carroll said, "I have heard that we (the city) may take out some of the speed bumps on Houston Street, but not all. It may be every other one. I think at this point its been a possible decision that might be made by the administration. There has not been any formal talk on it at this time."
Carroll said he'll keep people who live on Houston Street up to date on the issue.

Houston Street isn’t the only street with speed tables slowing down fire rescue and paramedics. EVERY street with a speed table is slowing down fire rescue and paramedics.
