Many people who own small businesses in the Mobile area are very interested in hearing more about Governor Bob Riley's economic recovery plan.Margie Wilcox and her daughter Julia watched Governor Riley's speech on wkrg.com
Wilcox owns Yellow Cab in Mobile and Mobile Bay Transportation and was just named Small Business Person of the Year by the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce.
One part of the Governor's speech that stood out to her was his proposal for a Back-to-Work Tax Credit of $500 to encourage companies to hire unemployed workers.
Wilcox said, "In small business, any tax credit helps. I'm particularly happy to see anything that's geared toward small business. I know that its very good when we recruit in some large industries, because that has a trickle-down effect, but when they specifically gear something to help small business, I think it helps everybody."
But Wilcox says many banks still aren't making loans, and she'd like to see the Governor take steps to help with that.
Wilcox said "I'd like to see him have some programs so that there's money for small businesses. In this particular crisis, one of the worst things that's happened is that you're unable to borrow money because you're a small business, so, some capital development, something to encourage the banks and lending institutions to loan to small business (is needed.)"
Wilcox's daughter Julia is in 8th grade, but she's keeping an eye on the economic downtown, too.
She said, "I'm kind of concerned, yeah, but I'm pretty sure that it should be good by the time I get old."
