BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Federal investigators have releasedtheir report on the derailment of a freight train carrying space
shuttle booster rockets through rural west Alabama.
An investigation made public Wednesday said inadequate repairs
to a railroad bridge combined with an enormous load of rocket
segments caused the derailment on May 2, 2007. Six people were
hurt, one critically.
The Federal Railroad Administration didn't find any violations
of safety regulations or issue any fines despite the problems.
The shuttle train was the first commercial load to cross the
bridge after more than a day of repairs. The span had been closed
two days earlier when a worker noticed a piece of buckled track.
