BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) - Larry Weappa, the former chief
operating officer at a military retirement home in Gulfport,
Mississippi, has been named director of the William F. Green State
Veterans Home in Bay Minette.
Weappa replaces David Grimes, who resigned amid reports that
some residents hadn't received proper care. The Georgia native was
hired after a four-month search that started with about 15
applicants.
Grimes left as concerns about the 150-bed facility were raised.
One report stated that staff didn't respond quickly enough when two
men fell and later died. Another state health department report
pointed to a series of problems, in which veterans in wheelchairs
had been injured or not taken care of properly.
The 63-year-old Weappa is a retired Naval officer licensed in
health care administration.
