A massive sewage spill in Theodore dumped four million gallons of waste in a wooded area near the South Mobile Business Park.
Officials with the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System blame vandals for the incident. They say logs and trash clogged a manhole, which connected to the main sewer line that services almost every household and business in Theodore.
At least one MAWSS worker was forced to go into the manhole and dig out the debris.
Four million gallons of sewage equals about 2 1/2 million toilet flushes!
"You just picture what came out of it just laying on the ground, deteriorating in the heat," said John Grim, who lives nearby.
Crews cleaned up most of the mess Tuesday. Workers spread lime on the ground to absorb the odor.
A MAWSS spokesperson tells News Five they offering a $5,000 reward to help catch the vandals.
The manhole, which was also damaged by gun shots, is located in a remote easement, south of I-10 and east of Mobile South Business Park.
