Unlicensed Tax Preparers

Taxes License Anyone can open a commercial tax preparation business in Alabama. Now legislators are fighting to change that.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Someone can open a commercial tax
preparation business in Alabama without any training or licensing.
Now a bipartisan group of legislators wants to change that. The
group announced Thursday that it is preparing legislation to
require testing and licensing for commercial tax preparers. The
bill will be introduced in the legislative session starting
Tuesday.
Democratic state Sen. Quinton Ross is working on the bill with
Senate Minority Leader Jabo Waggoner. Ross says some commercial tax
preparers exploit low-income taxpayers with poor disclosures,
exorbitant fees and fraudulent miscalculations.
Those handling the bill in the House include Democratic Reps.
Tammy Irons and Laura Hall and Republican Rep. Cam Ward.

People now do their own taxes online. A license to prepare tax returns is the least of our economic concerns right now. More of a concern is why ya’ll let Jerry go after 22 years of service. That I don’t understand.
