BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - The University of Alabama System's three
universities will depend on revenue from a tuition hike next year
to help in a difficult economic situation.
The system's board of trustees on Friday approved the 2010
operating budgets for the University of Alabama, University of
Alabama at Birmingham and University of Alabama in Huntsville.
All three schools plan to spend more even though they're losing
7 to 13 percent of their state funding.
All three will get their biggest revenue boost from tuition and
fees in fiscal 2010.
System Chancellor Malcolm Portera said the schools are facing a
difficult challenge because the state has cut its contribution to
their budgets. The three schools have lost a combined $141 million
in state funding in just over a year.
