Two University of Alabama students were killed Friday night in a crash on Interstate 65 near Mobile. Satsuma Police Chief David Benefield tells News 5 that six girls, all students at the University of Alabama, were traveling south on I-65 south on their way to the beach for the Labor Day holiday weekend. The accident happened around 8:20 Friday night when one of the vehicles the girls were traveling in left the road and overturned. Witnesses tell investigators it appeared the driver of the vehicle overcompensated while trying to keep the 2002 Ford Explorer on the road.

The driver of that vehicle, an 18 year-old from Mountain Brook, was found dead in the vehicle. Three passengers in the same vehicle were taken to USA Medical Center to be treated for injuries. One of those passengers, a 22-year-old from Texas, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Chief Benefield says the other two passengers, both 18 years-old UA students, are being treated at USA Medical Center for scrapes and bruises. Investigators say all four students in the Explorer were wearing their seat-belts when the accident occurred. The two other girls traveling with them were in another vehicle and were not injured. Authorities are still trying to notify family members of the victims so their names are not being released at this time.

i knew this would be a sad story. i waited before reading it. my prayers are with the family of all those involved in this terrible accident.

What is done is done and we cannot go back and change that.  What we need to do is to remember the parents of these young people in our thoughts and prayers for the days, weeks, and months to come.  Not only has the families been devastated by this tragedy but the others in the vehicles will NEVER forget the moment this accident happened and the things that happened afterwards.  I know some adults that a similar accident happened to them when they were teens and to this day the driver has night mares (from time to time) and the other that were in the vehicle have to deal with the fact that they have moved on in their lives, married and had children, etc and their friend never got that opportunity. I tell you they have some greal guilt over that accident and they will tell you that Pray is what has gotte them this far.

Stop casting stones and take a moment of silence and remember these young people that were lost and all those that have been affected by their deaths.

First of all let me say that this is tragic beyond description. If ever there was a parent’s nightmare this is it. The families are in my prayers.
There really needs to be a driving class on the effects of “over-compensation.”  A top-heavy SUV is the worst when it comes to this. Remember, when the vehicle leaves the road, don’t panic and snatch the steering wheel, EASE back onto the road. Driving on the shoulder for a few second could save your life and your friends.

claycitymadness - I understand your outrage at my quizzical nature, but this is not a prayer vigil.  It is a news site and many of us want to know the back-story of the things that grace the headlines.
. I feel deeply for the loss the families have suffered, but want to know the rest of the story.
. Too many young kids are driving these days while they have a cell stuck in their ears or are trying to text message a friend.  It is a REAL problem that should be addressed.
. This story does not deserve argumentative back and forth.  It is so very incredibly sad and the cause should be addressed.
. My last comment on the topic!

Maybe it’s a case of KANGAS loose in the upper paddock?

there are a thousand things that could have distracted these children, it may not even have been that. its the preliminary investigation stage only thats been released. could have been blinded by a stray light, could have reached for the radio, it could have been mechanical failure, we dont know and to public speculate about it less than twelve hours after the deaths of these kids seems more than a little insensative to me. using bob;s logic that we need to educate the public to prevent a recurrance of something, this accident could be used as a poster child for everything from texting to drinking to taking an antihistamine to checking your tire pressure, to whatever your favorite cause de celeb is. maybe not every news story should be open to comment, but then we would miss a chance to let the families know of our shared grief and sorrow at thier loss, which is what i thought this all wass about, have a nice weekend bob

I have to speak up for Bama. He’s not one to be rude, if you have followed his posts over time. It’s just your opinion but you are snapping to a judgement based on your own interpretation. Have a great day Clay.

ClayCity: Im thinking that Bama was just tossing an opinion out there. You know…just how you tossed yours out there. Im almost absolutely sure he was not “attacking” these girls memories. Now, while it does seem sort of off-taste, it was a very real possibility. I was coming down that road at the same time as the accident, and there were several girls in an explorer texting and laughing and not paying ANY attention to the road. Im not saying it WAS them, however, its a strange coincidence.Just putting my opinion out there…Watch Bob..Im gonna get attacked next! =)

claycitymadness - You make a passionate plea for those suffering this grief, but you fail to see that we must learn from such accidents so that they may be prevented in the future.
. People do not just suddenly veer off the road, unless there is some other factor within the equation.  My bet is the lead driver was texting the driver of the follow car and took her eyes off the road just long enough to lose control.
. Texting and cell phone use while driving is a very real danger and proven to be deadly more than once.
. Beyond that claycitymadness, you can shove your opinions up the orifice that follows you around every where you go.

that slam was to you bob, here we are at the atart of one of the most dangerous weekends of the year even if we didint have a hurricane in the gulf, and a car load of someone’s children, judging from the ages probably away from home for the first time, (Freshman or sophmores) on the way to the beach after a week of classes, a tragedy happens and two of someone’s children are killed, and you are wondering if they are text messaging. i just think your mind is in the wrong place, instead of wondering whether or not ehy were text messaging maybe you should be wondering how the parents are going to deal with this, and the insensitivity of your comment if they read the newspaper. therer are a lot of things you could have been wondering, you didint have to show your insensitivity and callousness at this time of hurt and heartbreak for the family and friends of these children. many many lives will be forever changed and your comments auch as they are dont assist them getting through it.
