Todd Gates was escorted out of the Robertsdale Police Department and placed in the back of a van headed for the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette. Gates, wanted on a felony charge of manufacturing crystal meth, was arrested at the Fred's Dollar Store on Highway 59.

Investigators showed us Gates' residence...an eerie and bizarre "compound" decorated with monsters, skeletons and signs of witchcraft. Gates also had a hangman's noose, surveillance cameras, possibly "booby" traps and signs warning people to stay away.

"He was armed and made the statement to family and friends he was not going to be taken without a fight," says Capt. Steve Arthur with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. "We're glad it didn't happen that way but it was significant we got him off the streets. The county and the surrounding areas are a better place without him on the street."

Detectives say Gates was trapped in a world of drug-induced delusion and paranoia.

"He was a health hazard and a safety risk to the community and a violent risk to the community," says Arthur.

Gates was also charged with rape by the Robertsdale Police Department. Investigators say the crime involved an underage girl Gates was an acquaintance with.

Good Job LE for getting this low life off the streets in such a professional manor.

Im with you belle-good job.

It’s obvious to me that they didn’t kick in this guy’s door cuz they’re a bunch of wussies.

The other guy was old and they probably thought would go down without a fight…And playing macho-man-kick-down-door is fun!

This guy made it clear he’s want to go down WITH a fight, so they were too scared to give him home court advantage.

Southernbelle-you and I both know that different circumstances call for different actions. There is no “textbook” case, like in HOW TO REMOVE AN APPENDIX. Unfortunately, there appears to be some mental blocks here. You would think that SOMEONE, ANYONE-could answer simple questions, right? I mean, your question was straightforward. Mine was straightforward when I asked WHAT SHOULD THEY HAVE DONE and WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Interesting, NO ANSWERS-still just as inciteful and hateful as ever. But that’s what trolls do. That’s what insanity does. So sad….

So, the cops just got lucky today?  Hmmmm….. that’s good to know.

Attack?  That word sure gets thrown around on this forum easily.

I answered your questions.  I said the cops had no business kicking down that door in the first place.  They have dealt with that bust in much the same way this one was handled.

We can go around in circles about whether the cops should have killed the man after his gun was fired, but that is not the point.  We don’t know for certain what was in the old man’s mind while under that kind of stress.  We do know that there are much better ways to deal with such a situation, as proven by the Gates case today.

Good job Baldwin County & RPD!

BamaBob: The reason this incident was handled the way it was, is because Mr. Gates was on the run becuse he was wanted in questioning to a different crime..an equally more serious crime involving a female. What the news did not tell you is that he knew he was getting ready to be taken down. He left his house and then running. He stayed hidden all night and a tipster called in to the Police when they saw him later in the day. But rest assured, when he was taken down, the Police had every gun in the arsenal ready for a fight.

Alright BB I see you will not answer any of my questions I have put forth to you.  I guess me asking questions would be personalizing just a little too much for you.  Was just trying to have a serious conversation with what I thought was an intellectual being but you once again just attack when I make personal statements.  My bad.

Can you consider the thoughts of anyone else and make any objections without personalizing every comment?

The point is that the cops should not have busted down that front door in the first place.  If that had not happened then the discussion about the man coming out of his bedroom with a gun would be nil!
