Investigators showed us Gates' residence...an eerie and bizarre "compound" decorated with monsters, skeletons and signs of witchcraft. Gates also had a hangman's noose, surveillance cameras, possibly "booby" traps and signs warning people to stay away.
"He was armed and made the statement to family and friends he was not going to be taken without a fight," says Capt. Steve Arthur with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. "We're glad it didn't happen that way but it was significant we got him off the streets. The county and the surrounding areas are a better place without him on the street."
Detectives say Gates was trapped in a world of drug-induced delusion and paranoia.
"He was a health hazard and a safety risk to the community and a violent risk to the community," says Arthur.
Gates was also charged with rape by the Robertsdale Police Department. Investigators say the crime involved an underage girl Gates was an acquaintance with.
