Mobile County Health Department schedules special days for school immunizations and processing out-of-state student immunization information.

The Mobile County Health Department will have additional personnel and streamlined procedures July 20-23 and July 27-30 at its immunization clinic in anticipation of the opening day of school, Aug. 10.

The clinic, located at 251 N. Bayou St., is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments are not required, and there is no charge for the immunizations.

Parents and caregivers should have immunization records, Social Security cards, and Medicaid cards with them when bringing children in for immunizations.

Alabama law requires that the immunization information of children who have moved to Mobile County from another state be transferred to the official Alabama school form. Because of the extra time this requires, the Health Department has set aside July 13-17 to assist parents and caregivers of such children.

Immunizations services are also available by appointment at the Health Department’s Saturday Clinic (251 N. Bayou St.); Newburn Clinic (248 Cox St.); School-Based Clinic (800 Whitley St.); Eight Mile Clinic (4547 St. Stephens Rd.); Semmes Clinic (3810 Wulff Rd. E.); Mt. Vernon Clinic (19180 Shepard Lake Rd.); Calcedeaver Clinic (1080AA Reservation Rd.); and Citronelle Clinic (19250 N. Mobile St.).

Children enrolled in day cares, Head Start programs, and public and private schools must have an Immunization Card, also called a blue card, prior to registering for school. Blue cards for students who will be attending the same school as they did the year before should still be on file at the school. Students entering the ninth grade must have a new blue card in order to register for school. The state does not recognize philosophical, moral, or ethical exemption from vaccinations. A medical exemption may be issued by a physician, or a Certificate of Religious Exemption can be obtained from the Health Department.

College vaccination requirements are specified by individual institutions. There are no state-regulated vaccination requirements for college students. They are specified by the individual institutions. However, it is recommended that college students be up to date with all childhood vaccinations. It is also recommended that students who will be living in dormitories get a meningococcal vaccination.
