MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has passed a bill that
would prohibit motorists from sending or reading text messages on a
cell phone while driving.
The bill by Rep. Jim McClendon of Springville passed the House
92-4 Thursday. It now goes to the Senate for debate.
McClendon, a retired optometrist, said he believes text
messaging is a major distraction. He said banning the practice
while driving would save lives.
Seven states and the District of Columbia currently ban sending
text messages while driving. At least nine other states ban text
messaging for some teenage or novice drivers.
Rep. Spencer Collier of Bayou La Batre voted against the bill.
Collier, a former state trooper, said he believes it would be hard
for law enforcement officers to enforce the ban.

Good point.  I have my laptop mouted in my truck
(just next to my cell phone mount).  So it will be ok for me to use my computer while driving… just not texting.

By the time the law passes, most people will have talk to text cell phones. Am I to assume that sending or reading text on a laptop while driving would be legal?

he would never get anything done. smart people scare others. makes them look mmm, well like they are , sheep

He should run for Governor.  I nominate Spencer Collier for Governor.  His campain slogo can be “Vote for Spencer Collier… the inteligent candidate.”

well i’ll be, there is someone up there that knows alittle about real life. good for you Rep. Spencer Collier “a former state trooper” we have a law you can use now. we don’t need another. we need to enforce the one we have now. you can write a ticket for wreckless driving for any act that LEO see as wreckless. Now if the persons pushing the no smoking ban had any “real life” knowledge we could free up some time to get real thing done .

Collier seems to be more inteligent than McClendon.  Thanks Spencer.
