The Bay Minette Police Department was dispatched to a house on North Hoyle Avenue early Saturday morning. When officers arrived, they found more than two dozen kids drinking in the back yard. It was 2 a-m and many of the teens, including several 14-year old kids, were drunk.

"There were a number of the youth that were intoxicated," says Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland. "We get breath tests to every one of them."

Tom Davidson, Junior was charged with conducting an open house party. Police say the 18-year old's parents were out of town for the weekend.

"It's shocking to me that parents allow their children of those ages to be out and about," says Rowland. "And in this instance, some of the parents we talked to knew their children were out but didn't necessarily know they were at this location."

Four others were arrested and charged with underage drinking. In all, police say 16 juveniles were taken into custody and released to their parents.

Yes the parents were at the house and this particular house has an apartment like house not connected to the other part.  I guess the PD didn’t think to look in the other house.  As far as the 14 year olds being out at 2am I think is ridiculous and the parents do need to have more control over their kids, but the fact that the 21 year old was let go because the police officer was friends with that person is not fair.  The other 4 charged as adults and sent to jail got their punishment so why should he get off scott free???  I know for a fact that the Police Chief has convered up for this one particular officer a time or two beofre and even threw away complaints about that officer so he could keep his job.  I wonder why the Police Chief and this particualr officer were let go from the Mobile County Police Dept.  Bay Minette always gets the poor end of the deal

Nothing new about the police dept….someone needs to investigate them also

First of all does Bay Minette not have a curfew for teens???  Secondly, I do not know about the schools there in South Alabama but I know that our schools never have dances or other activities that carry on past 12 midnight.  How can parents say they thought their 14 year old child was at a high school dance at 2 in the morning????

Secondly, because these kids were juveniles most juvenile judges will order them be released to their parent unless they are a habitual offender or unless they are involved in some type of domestic dispute with their parent.  It cost money to send these kids to juvenile hall and as horrible as it sounds a lot of cities and counties do not have the extra money in their budgets to send every child that gets in trouble to juvenille hall.

Finally, I personally think that the parents of these children who were out at 2 am should be charged for contributing to the deliquency or something along that line.  There is nothing good happening at 2am for teens.

So, were the parents at the house, or not?

First of all, the Bay Minette Police Department is not telling the whole story.  The chief always makes it out to be just the kids fault when in actuality the parents are just as much to blame.  As a friend of some of the people at that party, i was told the 1st officer to arrive let the only 21 year old leave and take 2 females with him so that the 21 year old wouldn’t be to blame.  I was also told that the parents were at the house and got up more than once to tell the kids to tone it down a bit so the cops would not be called.  As far as the TEENS being at the party, you have to understand that the parents thought these teens were at a High School dance that was being held that night.  The PD needs to step up and take responsibilty for some of their mistakes and let the public know what is really going on.

She was just trying to raise her kid to be a gold medal caliber swimmer.

SouthernMama, they can’t use their brains because they probably “bonged” it one time to many themselves.

How can you not know where your kids are? Children have should have NO privacy. Parents should be all up in their business! Know everything about them. don’t be a dummy & let you kids drink around you because you think it is better for them to drink with you than one of their friends. I heard a mama say the other day My boy smoked his first joint the other day & I smoked it w/ him. She said I would rather be the one teaching him than everbody else. What?? I mean come on people use your brain!

Call me crazy but I have a couple ideas:

Either
1) ENFORCE THE LAW IN SOME WAY

or

2) Update laws to reflect what people think is ok.

I’d rather see #1, but I may be in the minority.

I agree with razorsharp. The other thing is they were just released back to the parents as if the parents would actually handle the situation. What needs to be done is the parents being held responsible for the actions of their kids, and maybe they’d start being a little more parent like.
