According to Alabama State Troopers, Ashley Droege, 22, was driving northbound on Bayou la Batre Highway in Irvington Saturday afternoon when another vehicle slammed into her truck head-on. Troopers say 67-year-old Eileen Hodges was trying to turn into a driveway when she was rear-ended by a truck driven by a 17-year-old. That forced her to swerve into oncoming traffic slamming head-on into Droege's truck.
Droege, who was pregnant, was taken by helicopter to USA Medical Center with a broken pelvis. The accident caused her to go into premature labor. Her daughter Caylynn was born by emergency c-section.
Droege's husband and her three and four year old daughters are still recovering from the accident. The two children have since been released from the hospital. Droege's husband, 22-year-old David Lorry, is still in the hospital. Troopers say he is suffering from several broken ribs and lacerations to the face.
Troopers say the 17-year-old male who caused the crash may have been under the influence of drugs. They are waiting for blood test results to confirm that.
The teen could be charged with five counts of assault. Troopers say this is not the first time the teen has been in trouble.
The driver's name has not been released.
