The Mobile County School Board voted down a proposal that would allow security officers to carry tasers on school campuses. The issue was on the agenda during Monday night's meeting.

Before the meeting, Superintendent Roy Nichols recommended that the school board should adopt a policy that strictly outlines when security officers can use a taser. He also recommended that security staff be trained and certified by Mobile Police.

The proposal was rejected by a vote of 3 - 2. Ken Megginson and Judy Stout voted in favor of the proposal.

I agree with the councelman who said they need to bring back the paddle! LOL and yes it goes back to how you were raised.  If you are raised like an animal then you act like one…

I don’t think it is the size of the school.  My daughters went to a school in Detroit that each freshman class was 900 students (X 4 = 3600) and the school was 8 stories high.  They did not have these kinds of problems that they have here in the high schools.

The biggest difference was the way the kids were raised, the teachers (whose word meant something) and a tough administration.

But Detroit high schools had metal detectors at all entrances to the high schools and 1 or 2 policeman assigned to the school.  Those metal detectors kept out knives, guns and other metal items which could hurt or kill.

Has Mobile country ever considered metal detectors to ferret out guns etc coming into the schools.

You are right a lot of it comes back to the home life. Another factor is that access to these things, such as guns, knives, drugs and alcohol have become so easy that it is almost the same as going out and buying a new pair of shoes. However, no matter what the home life is of these kid’s something needs to be done in order to provide more safety for the ones that are doing right by being in school. A lot of parents blame their troubled teens on peer pressure and easy access, but if the child is instilled with good decision making than the odds of them giving into the peer pressure will be greatly diminished.  Using the whole peer pressure and easy access card is just a crutch for some parents to feel that they are doing all they can do to keep their child out of trouble. There is a huge difference in the occasional slip up of a child breaking rules and testing their limits and a child going off doing all kinds of illegal activity.

I believe we are all getting back to the home life of these kids that are causing all the trouble.I went to Murphy and we had over 1200 just in my graduating class and I don’t ever recall having any troubles any where near the troubles they have now at a lot smaller schools.

Yeah I think that the size is a big issue. They had one security guard working Theodore High when I went there. No way he could provide security for a school that size. Theodore is even one of the smaller sized high schools. At least from what I have seen. Of course they have teachers that monitor the halls at certain times, but a lot of teachers showed favoritism when I went there. You know letting one slide for being late or not having a pass, but not giving second thought to writing another up.

I think schools have gotten way too big!  They’re like small cities with all the problems that come along with such.  Need to go back to the neighborhood school concept, because it was much more manageable and also encouraged parental involvement.

Yeah. I think that some people look at tazers in the same range as pepper spray. That is far from the truth. Yes a tazer is better than just pulling your gun out, but there can be deadly and fatal consequences that can go with not using them properly, in which we have all seen. Apparently these security guards are not doing to well of a job because it seems that more extreme measures are having to be taken with the years that pass. So why equip these people with a tazer. When I was in school I never once saw the security guard doing walk abouts to keep an eye on what students are doing when going from one class to another or even getting the pass to go to the restroom. They were always out in the parking lot on their golf cart. Sure they drove around checking the parking lot, but in between school starting and dismissing they were parked by the gate where cars came in and out. I do not think the problem lies with what the security guards are equipped with it is how the security guards are doing their security work. That is not to say that all security guards are like this. Just the ones I have seen and come in contact with.

give em 44’s and lots of ammo. remember that monstor at davidson who beat up a 60 year old woman at murphy a fwe years ago. fred moonpie richardson got involved even though it didint concern him. then the next year the lads two sisters started a similar rukus. sorry, but even a 16 year old who decides to put his hands on me or come in my house and attempt to harm me or my family will have a closed casket funeral. i am just not going to tolerate it. my hands are only so big and i have accepted the fact i cant save everyone.

A taser, like any other weapon can be lethal and I don’t think just anyone around kids should be allowed to carry or use one on them.I probably could live with a police person having one in the schools but not just anyone.Give some of the deserving officers a chance to make a little extra money for them and their families.Interaction with the students and police would be a good thing,I believe, for the future.

Exactly!  A taser is too much for most common situations and far too little if confronted with a deadly situation.
