Wow what a wise comment. You do realize that these officers have families as everyone else does. They have families with mentally and physically impaired. Families with infants, toddlers and teenagers. You act like these people are scum. What you do not realize is that beneath the uniform and badge is your regular everyday person.

I hope he sues and wins half of MPDs budget. Maybe then, they can fire most of the officers. They have too many as it is, and they don’t know how to control them. More people need to sue.

Until crime rates can show that there is no need to approach every situation with all guards up than I think that some will continue to be displeased with how they feel LE handles certain, in some cases, all situations.

I think the point here that we can all agree on is that more facts, and not hear say, needs to be given before putting the blame on people. Do I feel that if they had not been aware of the situation before hand and still handled it the way they did to be wrong? No. Remember, it is just the man saying that he was “tazed” three different times. He also claimed that it was the devil. I do not think that we can use his statements or letter as a correct source. The force that the police used in this case was not as violent as some are making it out to be. Within hours after the occurrence he was physically unharmed. Did it scare him? I am sure it did and I do not blame it scaring him. If it does come out that the police did well know of his condition before hand and still handled the situation the way they did, than yes LE should take some fault and own up to their mistake. If it is found our for a fact that they mistreated him after finding out the case, than again yes I think they should own up to their mistake. However, just because some feel that they way LE may handle some situations it out of line does not necessarily mean that it is. I think some have the misconception that they should approach all situations in the mind set that it is not a threat. In all actuality it is the other way around. If you were to approach it in the way that some see fit, well that is how you get killed real fast…..........

smason-there are mentally challenged people that are non-threatening, then there are ones that can turn violent. I think BB suggested he could have untreated schizophrenia from the sounds of his reaction. Is it better to let people who MAY have violent tendencies roam the streets and become a threat to themselves and society, or to arrest them if the situation warrants? None of us were there to determine if the arrest was truly warranted or not.But it is pretty darn gullible to believe everything that the media reports as the gospel and base a biased judgment on that alone. Look at the different stories and interviews the family HAS given-the story changes. WHY???? I can’t say for 100% certainty that this was the “best” course of action in this particular situation, because I wasn’t there-nor do I know any “inside” info. BUT-I can’t with 100% certainty say that it wasn’t either. The ONE thing that I AM certain of though, is that a man/child with a 10 year old mentality and “episodes”(whatever that means, per the family reports) should NOT be wandering busy parking lots and highways without some sort of responsible supervision. Absolute negligence and abuse on their part. Instead of automatically cop bashing, why do you not look at more than one side of a story-that may be truth, or may be fiction. Again, this is NOT the first time the media has sensationalized a story that ending up being totally bogus and false, based on “claims.”

That may very well be the case in some views and opinions… or not….
Obviously sometimes police officers make mistakes and sometimes parents let their mentally challenged children run loose in public unsupervised.
Two wrongs don’t make a right but it does appear the horse is still getting a beating.
Some LE officers and some parents should learn to use better judgement.
IMO of course.

Without beating a dead horse, I don’t think anyone is disagreeing that this man would not have had to endure this kind of violence if he had only been accompanied by an adult. But since he wasn’t, that makes it okay for the police to use such violent, drastic measures to get someone out of a bathroom?? Give me a break.

Like we’ve gone over many times: it is NOT acceptable for law enforcement to use violence as a tool against non-violence.

And the whole excuse about the police not knowing he was mentally challenged no longer flies with me because even AFTER they found out the truth, they STILL wanted to follow through and book and jail him! And when they found out they couldn’t, they (supposedly) dropped him off alone in a parking lot! Again, what a bunch of schmucks.

It’s a sorry situation, all the way around.

I was referring to your first post, but I definitely agree that he should be protected, and if the family is unable/unwilling to provide that level of care and protection that he deserves/needs-then other avenues need to be explored.I hope Adult Protective Services is ALL OVER this.

I think normal people agree with that assessment bobcat-and are wondering the same exact thing.

The cops should have taken him straight to a mental facility and gone after the mother. He shouldn’t have been out loose in the first place. IMO.
