The Saraland School Board had hoped to name a new superintendent Thursday night.Instead, board members heard from people about their recent decision to change the name of one of their schools.
The school board postponed naming a new superintendent.
Board president Bill Silver said negotiations had been going on for several days, and were going on right until meeting time, with a candidate he didn't name.
However, he said the board wanted to make sure it was following the law in picking a superintendent.
Silver said, "There was some question about the process that we used and we are trying to get clarification and we're confident that we used the correct process and that we did not violate any state law or the open meetings law."
However, board members did hear from eight people upset about the boards decision to rename Nelson Adams Middle school as Saraland Middle School.
Among those speaking was Adams' grandson.
Nelson Leon Adams said, "My grandfather was well thought of since the early 1920's as a community activist, landowner, landlord. He owned property here in Saraland."
Interim superintendent Paul Sousa said he thought the speakers made good points, including possibly re-naming the school Saraland Adams Middle School.
He said board members may re-visit the issue.
School board members hope to name a superintendent at their next meeting May 21.
