Store “Too Hot” For Foley

Alabama Foley Business owners and people living near new adult video store on Highway 59 near Foley say store not good for Baldwin County

A new adult gift store is the first thing drivers on Highway 59 see when they get to Foley. The video store, located near the Foley Beach Express, is hard to miss with its oversized yellow signs and provocative window displays. Several business owners located near the store don't like their new neighbor.

"It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they moved," says Darrell Allen. Allen runs a custom cabinet shop near the adult video store. "Everybody has a right to make money but the image of that business doesn't project well."

Homeowners in the Aspen Creek subdivision right behind the adult gift store are also concerned.

"It's a disgrace," says Patricia Weeks. "That place is just a few feet from my backyard. I don't like it."

Foley Mayor John Konair says he's received several complaints about the adult gift shop, but Konair says there's nothing he can do about it. The mayor says the business is not within Foley's city limits. Konair, however, has contacted county commissioners about the issue. County commissioners tell News 5 they've contacted Baldwin County District Attorney. Commissioners want the D-A's office to make sure the adult gift shop is operating legally.

And as I’ve stated before, I work at an adult novelties store in Mobile county, and I think most Mobilians have a warped perception of what an “adult novelties” store is…They sell things such as instructional videos “Great Sex During Pregnancy” and books such as “The Ultimate Sex Guide for Peoples with Disablities”. The clothing is no different than things you find at Victoria’s Secret, as you can tell from these window displays.

Well it depends on how many racists are out there these days. An ethnic family wouldn’t bother me, but this store would. I would like to believe the number of racists would be far far fewer than those opposing an adult store like this. Anything considered negative by any significant group of potential buys does affect property value.

Very, very few people want to look out the window and see that kind of business within walking distance. Most of us do not want to see any type of business out our backdoor.

Yeah but that’s like saying if an ethnic family moved in next door they would decrease property value because it elimates potential buyers who are racist.

The lady in the report says the store is a few feet from her back yard. If she goes to sell her home she can only sell it to someone who doesn’t mind it being there. Some (if not most) buyers with kids are going to be concerned at a minimum and might shy away… I would. So in that way the store has changed the demographic and affected the number of potential buyers which decreases selling opportunity. A number of factors would determine the extent of the decreased value including the stores reputation. I’d say the more expensive the house the more of an affect it will have because folks with money can be more picky.

That big sign next to I-10 that looked like a Roman candle got a whole lot of heat. Plus, most people didn’t even know that place was there until they cleared out some of the trees. That messed up all the entertainment that was supposedly going on in the parking lot.

OH MY GOD. “Provocative window displays” I just watched the video…
This place is next to the FOLEY BEACH EXPRESS WAY and all they have in the window are items on NON-ANATOMICALLY CORRECT mannequins wearing items that cover more than SWIM SUITS you’d see on REAL WOMEN by the time you get to end of that express way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How does a store decrease property value? It’s not a cancer causing factory, it’s not a loud motor speedway, heck, it’s not even train tracks or heavy duty powerlines!
