Special Grand Jury Returns 103 Indictments

The same special Grand Jury that indicted Herman Thomas in March on charges that he sexually abused inmates at Mobile Metro Jail has returned an additional 103 indictments in a report filed Friday morning.

The report does not name a defendant, but Thomas' attorney, Bob Clark, said this morning he expected more charges to be filed in the former judge's case.

Thomas, who retired from the Circuit Court bench in October 2007 amid allegations that he paddled inmates and forced them to perform sexual acts in exchange for leniency, pleaded not guilty earlier this year to 57 counts including kidnapping, extortion and sodomy.

Friday's report says the March 2009 special session of the Mobile County Grand Jury considered 16 additional cases and submitted 103 indictments, all felony charges. One case was no billed.

District Attorney John Tyson would not comment on the special session, saying Grand Jury proceedings are secret.

Early Friday afternoon, Clark said he was not aware of additional indictments against his client.

Thomas is scheduled to go to trial on the charges filed in March on October 5th.

Yeah, makes you wonder how many defense lawyers made deals with the judge and offered up their clients’ butts for a get out of jail card.
