Speaking Out On Gulf Coast Classic Decision

Alabama Mobile There are different thoughts on the action by the Mobile City Council Tuesday.

Many people around the Mobile area have formed opinions on whether the Mobile City Council should have spent $275,000 on the Gulf Coast Classic.
News Five asked people visiting Langan Park Tuesday afternoon their thoughts on the issue.
Jeremy Kramer of Mobile said, "I think we should keep it here, keep it in the home town. Absolutely."
Diego Robinson of Mobile agreed.
He said, "I think it is worth it. I think it would be a good advertisement for the city."
Jeff Alderman of Mobile said, "I think it could go either way. Yeah, its good keeping a tradition alive, but if they think there's something that's more deserving to spend the money on, then go ahead and do that. Whatever is best for the economy right now, I think."
However, Jessica Butler of Mobile said, "Maybe they should spend the money on schools or senior citizens or something."
Michael Cox of Mobile and Tishondra Morris of Mobile both agreed with the council action.
Cox said, "Of course, I think you should keep it here."
Morris said, "I think it is worth a try. I think it is worth it. I really do."

I think it is BULL S**T. They dont have the money to help people fix rod but they can give it to a bunch of people to throwa ball and run up and down a field. They can give me the money to do that. Personnally just because it is two black teams that is why. But that aint the point. the point is that money should be put to good use. Fixing roads or fixing something. may be put it towards more food stamps or free health care or medicine for the elderly. Something better then a Dam football game

Those stand look really full of people too! This is ridiculous to spend on a game when the stand are less than 1/2 full.

Why don’t they have sponsers like The Senior Bowl, and the LPGA, and The GMAC Bowl? I would like to see what is spent on these events as compared to The Football Classic. I would also like to see where this money is being spent? I know alot of times with Bowl Games teams are paid for playing in the game. Is this the case here? Is Sam Jones trying to get another Degree on our dollars? When you say that you do not have the budget to help out the School System but you do have the budget to spend almost 300,000 dollars on a football game. Please WKRG do a follow up story with some of the questions off of this board.

I agree—- what are they using this money for? They don’t mention upgrading Ladd. They just have earmarked the money for the game. I want more specifics as to how exactly OUR money will be used.

No wonder Sam Jones wanted to snap up the Moffett Road & Tillman’s Corner commercial areas! He really put one over on the folks that voted for the annexation in their areas. This is what he’s using their tax dollars for…a football game. Where is the money he promised to give to the school system after annexing the Airport & Schillengers area? Shouldn’t that money be paid before they worry about a GAME?? Don’t get me wrong, I love football, but this is wrong. The City of Mobile will soon be looking to file bankrupcy like Prichard did several years ago & it is because of stupid stuff like this. All of those “city leaders” should be impeached & barred from ever holding public office again!
