South Alabama Athletic Director Joe Gottfried is retiring. Gottfried will make the announcement at a 3:00 p.m. news conference.

Gottfried was hired by USA as the Assistant Athletic Director in 1981 after successful stints as a basketball coach at Ashland (Ohio) University and Southern Illinois. He took over as Athletic Director in 1984.

During Gottfried's 25 years as Athletic Director, the Jaguars have won 106 league titles and have appeared in 56 NCAA Championship events. Seventy-four USA student-athletes have earned All-America recognition. Sixty-two of the school’s coaches have been selected the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year. And 95 baseball players have signed pro-contracts, including 15 who made it to the Major League level.

Gottfried’s impact can be seen across campus, from the Mitchell Center to Stanky Field.

Gottfried's son Mark was the men's basketball coach at Alabama from 1998-2009. His brother Mike is one of ESPN’s top college football analysts.

This is a terrific man and athletic director. Look where we have come since he first walked on campus. I appreciate how he’s gone above and beyond his title to make fans welcome and feel appreciated. He has attracted quality coaches and encouraged the athletes to be their best. He and his wife, Mary are simply excellence. Thank you for everything Joe! Our best wishes and prayers for your future.

Thank goodness, bout time he left. Now we can get someone in there who wont fire a coach for no reason, now, lets get rid of Mal Moore at Alabama, and we have it made.
