At the Hillsdale Area Community Center, the gym's the place to escape the heat, but the pool is out of the question.

“I feel like it should be open cause it's hot, know what I’m saying we out here sweating we need the pool you know there are kids out here,” says Joe Nopolis. He’s a young man who wants the pool reopened. Hillsdale and a handful of other city pools are still closed a week after the traditional memorial day opening weekend. People that live around Kidd Park say places like this are very important to the community.

“During the summer, parents still have to work and the kids have no transportation to a farther pool and they're able to walk to their pool in their community,” says Kashema Cleveland. Mobile architectural engineer Jay Isacks says some pools still need repairs to meet new federal safety standards which could cost $25,000 per pool.

“The kids are inconvenienced you know, but I think people with survive it,” says Thomas Cunningham, who lives near Kidd Park. While most people we spoke with in various communities want their pools open as soon as possible others say they're okay with it as long as the pools are safe.

“Make sure the pool is ready because children go in there, the most precious of all things, if there's a problem with it just work on it until they can get it together,” says Cunningham.
The closed pools may not be open until later this month.
