Some special needs athletes are proving they've got what it takes to be fierce competitors. They take part in a bowling league every Friday. No matter what bowling technique they use, they can knock down some pins!
The bowlers are part of an organization called SNAP, Special Needs Athletes Program. Joe Marshall is the founder.
"We have some that bowl with 2 hands, the house alley has their own balls, they don't need equipment or anything.. Its just something different so that they can have a little fun in life," said Marshall.
Craig Kirschenman isn't shy about telling you how well he can bowl. He's been hitting the lanes for the past 15 years and he bowled 200 strikes last year!
These athletes get a lot fo support. Each is paired with an adult partner. Irma Turner has two special needs daugthers on the team.
"It just brings us closer together you know as a family and its something we can all do and they beat me bowling," laughed Turner.
These athletes get competitive. They like to keep score.
Ron Reigan, who started a league at Skyline Bowling Lanes, says he never imagined it would provide so much enjoyment to so many people.
"Just to give back something to the kids, as I told someone the other day, they are so appreciative. You give a little medal, $125 patch, you would think you are giving them a million dollars, so it does make you feel good to give back," said Diegan.
What do these athletes like best? The comraderie on Friday nights.
"Being with friends.. I have friends that have friends. And being with friends on friday night," said Linda Turner.
The athletes meet every Friday at 5:30pm at Skyline Bowling Lanes. They are looking for adult partners to bowl alongside the athletes. If you are interested, please give Joe Marshall a call at 251.680.1394.
