
“They tried to shoot us at that time, but the gun gots jammed and then they came back the 2nd time they started shooting by the pool,” says Marquis Stewart. He was among the people with Markel Anderson when someone opened fire from their car outside the Figures Community Center Friday night. Police say 16-year-old Montreal Lockett and two other 15-year-old boys have been charged with Markel's murder.
“He'd do crazy things, even when you're down stuff just to make you giggle or something like that,” says friend Marcus McDuffie. He's one of several people who visited a makeshift memorial outside the center. Friends say it has really shaken them up. Neighbors say a fatal shooting is rare, but violence, unfortunately is not uncommon
“They're be shootings, but never this drastic period,” says Marcus. Police say the suspects are from Prichard. They say the shooting stems from a longstanding dispute with people in the Toulminville Community.
