Should boys and girls be placed in separate classes in middle school?
That's the question a lot of people in Mobile are talking about.
The American Civil Liberties Union in Alabama is challenging Hankins Middle School's policy of separating boys and girls in classes.
Hankins parent Mark Jones said he contacted the ACLU on behalf of his seventh grade son, Jacob.
The ACLU sent a letter to the Mobile Public School System challenging the policy.
Jones said he didn't like the fact his son and other boys are in separate classes from girls.
Mark Jones said, "How are the kids going to develop socially when they can't be with members of the opposite sex?"
Allison Neal, a staff attorney for the ACLU in Alabama, said, "We believe that it's illegal. It violates Title 9 of its implementing regulation, the Equal Education Opportunities Act and the Constitution.
Jacob Jones said, "It just teaches how bad segregation was between black and whites. Now, (they) turn around and do it to us."
But Hankins Principal Cheryl Wittner said boys and girls at Hankins eat breakfast and attend assemblies together.
Wittner said she favors gender-specific classes because research shows "boys and girls learn differently, especially at the middle school age. The middle school age child has a wide gap between how boys learn and how girls learn."
News Five asked some parents of Hankins students what they thought of the separate classes.
Nicole Ezell said, "I personally don't feel like its right for each school to decide whether they can or cannot do it."
Hankins Parent April Miller said, "I think that the kids seem to study a little bit better. I know that my son personally focuses a little bit better."
And when asked if he would rather have classes with girls, Miller's son, Timothy Thorsteins, said, "Sometimes I would, but not all the time because sometimes I need to focus just a little bit better."
There are other schools in Mobile and Baldwin Counties that have single sex classes.
The ACLU has not filed a lawsuit yet, but Mark Jones says that could be coming if changes aren't made.

well atleast the people who want to learn.

i agree with you sirk we can’t learn anything in class this year. do you want to know why?? Because girls are girls and no matter what girls they are they like to run there mouth. so when a teacher says any thing else besides the topic we are on every one gets off subject and it takes atleast 10 min. to get the class bake on task but even then you still have people passing notes and talking so your right we cant learn any thing because people don’t no how to shut the traps.
But i am 1 of only about 10 kids in the whole entire eighth grade so that tells you right there that we have to atleast be learning some thing.

DEW, there is a difference between a mistake and not knowing how to spell a word at all.

I got stuck in a moment of sarcasm, and normally would not have said anything, if not it been for the fact that it happened in a paragraph correcting someone else. Take it easy, laugh a little! smile

Looking at the rest of Sirk’s spelling, I have to believe that “readning” was simply a typographical error.  Many kids today do not know how to spell, nor do they know/practice correct grammar (and it CANNOT all be blamed on “computer language”).  Today, correcting a student’s written paragraph often means RE-WRITING it.

pssssst…....Sirk, the word is “reading” NOT “readning”!!!

Just thought you might wanna practice what you preach! shut eye

Kemmie298:  Not trying to be too ugly about this, but from looking at your spelling, maybe kids should have been separated back in kindergarten. I cannot believe that kids cannot spell these days. I know they have readning and writing in schools (or they used too), but somehow these kids are passing the grade and not learning anything. Something is wrong there. We can’t really blame it on the teacher because she can’t teach if your little “angel” is disrupting class and cannot be disciplined for it at school or at home. When teens come on here to post, that really shows you what has been going on in our schools.

i am an eighth grade student at hankins and some times i like the oppisite sex being sepperated…but then again there is times when i think it causes more problems…this year i have A honor roll..so i think that"us"being seperated is helping me focus more. we arent as nerves to speak up and answer a question in class now,and arent scared to say they need help with some thing.BUT on the other hand students tend to talk back to teachers alot more than last year, the students have alot more altercations mostly about the oppisite sex any ways thats only a FEW things.and when mrs.whitner says we are together at asembleys that is true in a way but girls and boys sit on opposite sides of the gym.and when we switch class we have all the teachers and principles standing between us so we cant even say hey.so personaly it doesnt really matter if we are together or not.but if u are lookin for more information on how and what we do when we are sepperated take it from some 1 who is experiencing it!

Well,it’s like this..we have detention,24-hour written notice. They don’t show up.We are told to go back through the process of re-assigning detention(2nd notice, more copies-because teachers cannot be trusted-we must have some proof that we acdtually sent a notice home).Copy machine is broken, out of ink,or teacher is out of paper-all and more are possibilities-plus,where is the time to do this-we are not talking about 1 or 2 students.Told to CALL parents (phones disconnected, no one answers, etc.)Kids still don’t show up (how much time have I now spent?)What happens? Many times?NOTHING.And full blame cannot be put on the administrators. They are brow-beaten about the number of suspensions. However,a recent trend…we have hoardes of students who get suspended & STILL come to school, although their main goal seems to be to stay out of class.Even though they can be arrested for tresspassing, still they come. How many are actually arrested?VERY FEW.Few consequences, little/no consistency

I can tell you how to straighten them back out. Reinstate corporal punishment, and quit telling parents that they can not discipline their kids. Children and teens nowadays have nothing to fear. You can’t whip them, you can’t control them. When i was a kid, I got paddled in HIGH SCHOOL at Alba High School! By the coach, by the principal, by the assistant principal. I can remember it like it was yesterday, and the words that were spoken to me before and after still play over in my head to this day. I was a HELLION, plain and simple, but even I could not take the embarrassment of crying in front of my peers. If you have a kid that skips class, why in heavens name would you suspend them? Where is the logic in that? That’s like just going to a robbers house and giving him money, exactly what he/she wants. Time outs are a joke. I’m not even sure if they still allow RETRACT and DETENTION. If not they should. Where did we go wrong as a society, that lets children rule the parents?
