West Mobile Biz Owners Fed Up

Mobile Police Robbery Some business owners in West Mobile feel like sitting ducks to crime.

West Mobile business owners say they're tired of being sitting ducks to crime and are taking matters into their own hands.

Some of the owners are sleeping at work to keep an eye on things. The complaints are coming from Dawes Road and Leroy Stephens Road.

Last week, the driver of a stolen van crashed through the front of the Chevron station to try and steal the automatic teller machine. Less than a week later, someone cleaned out the gas station's register. Owners say what happened at the Chevron is just a sampling of the problem. People out here are calling it a "crime wave."

Don Gomien is in law enforcement and owns a tanning and limo service in Leroy Stevens. He says he feels like a "hostage" to the situation. "I think the criminal element is taken over out here the police are losing the battle."

John Graham is a retired police officer and owns a gym on Dawes Road. He plans to spend Monday night at work. "First off, I'm gonna let em get inside. Then I'm gonna hold em til the police get here. I'm not a vigilante. I'm not angry at anybody but I need to protect my business and my income."

Mobile Police say crime isn't up in this area and there have only been 6 break ins since January 2009. "We haven't seen anything as far as a spike in criminal activity in that area but we do track crime and respond accordingly." MPD has been patrolling that area of West Mobile since the annexation vote of 2007.

You’re right, Wait4Me. Semmes has to get on the stick at once with incorporation if they want to beat this act of legal theivery.  The leadership of Mobile may believe in God, but they think nothing of using trickery and deceit to steal property from others. Past performance has proven this to be so.  Semmes - EXPEDITE the process and become a city ASAP!!!!!!!

Soyouwillknow, first Alabama has the Castle Law, which simply means you as a citizen do not have to retreat if you feel as though you or another person is in danger of being severely harmed or killed.  This can be inside or outside your home or in your local store, as long as YOU felt there was a clear and present danger to someone you have the right to use the amount of force you deem necessary to stop the incident from happening. All citizens of Alabama should be familiar with this law and understand their rights under it.  Next, the stores on Dawes and Leroy Stevens are in the police jurisdiction of Mobile already, they are well within the 3 mile limit.  The problem is Mobile has annexed its self right into more areas than the current police force can handle. They were spread thin and losing officers well before the first land grab that Mayor Jones made.  And they really put themselves out of position with the most recent land grab.  And you are right within the next year Sam and the crew of clueless (city council) will make another attempt to annex Semmes and most likely will try to grab the new Wal-Mart at Cottage Hill and Dawes, all inn the name of tax revenue.  But for what? Less police protection? Less or inadequate services?

I have it figured out now.  What’s going to happen is that the Mayor is going to tell these people that if they want better police protection, they need to join the City of Mobile in his next annexation vote that will just happen to be at the end of this year.  This will be one of his main selling points.

Isn’t there a new WalMart at Cottage Hill and Dawes?

I’m sure if the City spent the 2 cents sales tax that they are collecting at that WalMart (for being within the 3 mile police jurisdiction) on police protection for those fine people, they wouldn’t have all this crime that they have been experiencing.

Mark my words.

Nah, the MPD was too busy downtown on St. Stephen’s Road and some other road giving citations for expired this or that, no insurance, no seat belts and stuff like that.  See, that’s “easy money” for them…

But that’s ok, let this kinda stuff keep happening and people will police their own neighborhoods and this stupid idiots who are breaking into businesses and homes will get their brains blown out by someone who isn’t going to put up with it.

If they come to my house, they had better be ready for a gun greeting them (as soon as they enter LOL).  I don’t think you can shoot them if they are outside.  And what’s that saying, “A Dead Man tells no lies.”

Oh, and this is the kind of police protection that the people living in the 3 mile “Police & Fire Jurisdiction” get for their 1/2 City tax they pay even though they are not in the City Limits.  Plus, it’s taxation without representation!

Wait, how did they swing on that annexation vote?

That’s what I thought.

A lot of the crimes don’t make the news. Only when an arrest is made do they call the news media. There is an epidemic of crimes being committed. It’s not safe to answer your door bell after dark. I know, a while back 3 hoodie bandits rang my bell to see if anyone was home. Smith and Wesson answered the door for me. They ran. And I live in a rural area. All this is a result of D. A. John Tyson and Herman Thomas turning these thugs loose with a slap on the wrist. We’re under seige in Mobile from the criminals.

Guessing these are the same crud that drove the van through Wal Greens on Cottage Hill and Knollwood a few weeks back.  Hope they catch them soon before they stat approaching citizens.
