BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama sheriff who was imprisoned
after admitting he legally pocketed more than $200,000 from his
jail kitchen while feeding meals that prisoners described as skimpy
and unappetizing has agreed to give up future profits from the
operation.
A court document filed Friday showed that Morgan County Sheriff
Greg Bartlett has promised to use all government funding he
receives for jail food to actually feed prisoners.
That's a change from the past, when Bartlett pocketed any
profits generated by the kitchen under an Alabama law dating to the
1920s.
A federal judge jailed Bartlett overnight this week after ruling
that he purposely fed prisoners inadequately to maximize his
personal profits under the system.

Inadequately ? Did any of them starve to death? If not, who gives a damn. It’s jail, not the Fire Mountain Bar & Grill! I guess if they don’t like the food, that will keep em from coming back! You ever been to the Metro Jail? Their food ain’t too appetizing either, however after 3 days, you seem to love it! While i don’t agree with him pocketing the money, I don’t agree with catering to those who are incarcerated for breaking the law either!  shut eye

With ANY “personal” profits, this man needs to be behind bars eating the skimpy meals that he forced those for whom were in his charge.

When it comes to politicians and law enforcement, there are two sets of laws. One for them, which gets them off the hook and one for everyone else, which will get them prison.

This law has been the subject of many fraud related issues. The law needs to be changed since it seems that it is too tempting for most sheriffs to resist abusing.

What type of personal profits—the sheriff’s department or his personal expenses?
