SATSUMA, Alabama - There are new developments concerning a sex offender living in Satsuma. We first reported the story just a few days ago.
People in the neighborhood are angry over not being notified about the registered sex offender.
On November 3, Brenda Stolee presented the Satsuma City Council with a petition wanting to know why people living on Dale Drive weren't notified that registered sex offender Michael Brooks had moved on their street.
Public records show Brooks was convicted of raping a 15 year old girl in 2005.
Carol Weaver lives on Dale Drive.
She said, "I'm upset about it, because I have three children myself."
Julie Preston said, "We got no warning at all."
Now, the story has taken a new turn.
Satsuma Police said they got information Brooks had moved.
Police said they found him at his mother's house, which is located within 2000 feet of a day care center, and, according to Police Chief David Benefield, "took him into custody for violating his probation. During the arrest, as they were arresting Mr. Brooks, they patted him down, and found some prescription narcotics that were not prescribed to him in his possession, so he was also charged with possession of a controlled substance."
Upon hearing the news, Stolee said, "I am happy that the neighbors can sleep peacefully tonight."
Weaver said, "Protecting our children is all we want, and, obviously, he's more of a danger than we thought."
And Benefield said Satsuma is looking into adding a new program to the city's website called OffenderWatch.
He said, "Citizens could go on to the city's website, click on the OffenderWatch link, type in their address, and set the parameters, one mile, two miles and it will give any sex offender that is registered within that parameter that they have set."
Benefield said OffenderWatch also mails out notifications to people in an area where a sex offender lives.
