MOBILE, Alabama - News 5 has learned that the Senior Bowl will be staying in mobile.

The headlines in the morning paper read 'Bye Bye Senior Bowl?' The story indicated the all-star game was close to signing a deal to move to Jacksonville.

But today, lawyers and chairman of the boards for both Ladd Peebles Stadium and the Mobile Arts and Sports Association reached an agreement to play the 2010 game here and negotiations continue on a long-term contract.

I talked to Mayor Sam Jones from his hospital bed in Arkansas, where he's undergoing a final round of cancer treatments. Mayor Jones says the new deal will be good medicine for him and the City of Mobile.

"I am very very pleased," Jones said. ''There are a lot of people in this city who have been working very, very hard to try to make sure the Senior Bowl remains in Mobile just not for this year but in the future. And we'll continue to do that. So its a great announcement and we're ready to move forward with the game."

A formal announcement is expected next week.

SHOW ME THE MONEY!

The Senior bowl is not as important as my next statement. I hope Mayor Sam Jones final round of cancer treatment cures the cancer. He is one fine Mayor to be able to run the city from a hospital bed far away. If I could, I would drive to Arkansas to visit and thank him for a great job.

Yea good idea patriot. Just concentrate on your little area of the entire county. Semmes. You shouldn’t be concerned about the ENTIRE county you live in, just “your little area”. Try not to worry about the “rest of the county”, you live, work, play in, just make sure your “little town” stays just like you want it. Great attitude to have for your city, your county, and the state you live in. Maybe you’re not from here, and maybe you don’t understand the significance of the Senior Bowl in this area. Or the financial impact it has had on our city for all the years it’s been held here. It’s much more important to our local economy than the GMAC bowl game, or all the high school games combined. I just hope the city will pool all available assets from other projects in order to do what it takes to keep the Senior Bowl where it belongs. Mobile, Alabama!!

Mobile must have promised them much more than the $650,000 that Jacksonville promised them for each year of a 5-year contract.  I think that Sam Jones will push for more annexations almost immediately after he gets out of the hospital. And if this is so, then Semmes needs to proceed with incorporation without delay - they should do this anyway because it would stop Mobile from taking the area over and it becoming crime-ridden just like Mobile and Prichard. Also, the quality of life that the people in Semmes enjoy now would change forever for the worse if they were made part of the city of Mobile. Also, any other incorporated areas that are adjacent to Semmes might ought to look into joining in with Semmes and become part of Semmes when they incorporate. The city of Mobile should finance the Senior Bowl with the income that they are currently receiving from the cruise terminal, the civic center, the convention center, Battleship Park, BayFest, Mardi Gras, New year’s moonpie raise, and city taxes and fees from the newly annexed area in Tillman’s Corner and west Mobile.  Mobile has plenty of money to afford just about anything they want to - just look at the trips, luncheons, and other money that they spend on a daily basis.  JMO

YAY good!
