MOBILE, Alabama - Senior Bowl officials and Ladd-Peebles Stadium board have reached a deal on a long-term agreement to keep the Senior Bowl In Mobile through 2018. The only thing that's left is for both sides to sign on the bottom line.

Milton Joyner, the chairman of the Ladd-Peebles Stadium board of directors, tells News 5's Randy Patrick the contract is a nine year deal, but the Senior Bowl can opt out after three years and after six.

Joyner says he is anxious to sign the contract and hopes to have a formal announcement later today.

As News 5 first reported last week, the two sides reached a deal on Friday to play the 2010 game in Mobile and negotiations were continuing on a long-term contract. Those negotiations have ended in Mobile's favor.

The Senior Bowl, which has been played in Mobile since 1951, had been talking with other cities, including Jacksonville, Florida since its contract with Ladd-Peebles Stadium expired in January.

I would have to say that the Senior Bowl has a much larger economic impact on the entire area, as compared to some other things the city has spent money on in recent years. And one of them is the Gulf Coast Classic. Enlarging the money paid to that orginization last year was money down the drain. It didn’t bring in any more money last year than in years past, however the citizens of Mobile paid over $200,000 more last year than in years past. You have to remember the media, and coaching staff, and required personnel for the Senior Bowl, are in the area for almost a week, rather than just a wkend as in other events. Then of course the game wkend itself is another economic impact in and of itself. Glad to hear something good happening to the city for a change.

I think it does bring in a lot of dollars for the downtown area.  But, there is always a tipping point with such things.  Politicians tend to forget about the bottom line, because they are just spending tax dollars.  If it was coming out of their pockets, they would know where every penny went and when too much is too much.

Does the senior bowl bring in alot of money??? i dont know because it usually around Mardi Gras…just was curious…

I was thinking the same thing BamaBob!

Wonder what the deal was and if Mobile can afford it?
