MOBILE, Alabama - The fate of the Senior Bowl in Mobile is still up in the air despite claims by Ladd-Peebles Stadium officials that keeping the game here is all but a done deal.

Today, the Mobile Arts and Sports Association, the owner of the Senior Bowl, issued a news release in which chairman Victor Lott said the organization is reviewing the proposed facility lease agreement with Ladd-Peebles---and they'll take it up in a meeting on thursday.

Lott said MASA's board will consider the agreement with the stadium board and consider their intentions to continue or to discontinue discussions with other cities, that have expressed remarkable interest in hosting the senior bowl.

All of this comes after announcements by city officials including Mayor Sam Jones, and Ladd-Peebles board chairman Milton Joyner that an agreement was all but a sure thing and the only thing left to do was sign the contract.

According to Joyner the deal calls for a nine year agreement between Ladd and the Senior Bowl, with options at 3 years and 6 years. Joyner said he expected to sign the contract yesterday but that didn't happen. Victor Lott, in today's news release said the Mobile Arts and Sports Association will release the results of its discussion after the meeting on thursday.

Senior Bowl and MASA officials declined to comment beyond their news release. Milton Joyner did not return a call for comment.

Yes it is and there is so much talent here.  We could pull from 4 or five big SEC schools.  Our state is one of very few that have NO proffessional sports teams of any kind.  This is football central.  A pro football Team down here would boost our economy in a way that senior bowls and moonpies can’t.

That sounds like a great idea rolltide33 and perhaps some of the filthy rich players would move to the beautiful Eastern Shoreline from Daphne to Point Clear and build waterfront mansions which would boost the economy with new home sales and hotels. That’s something we would all benefit from. South Alabama is definitely a football enthusiastic region.

Our state needs a pro football team.  We bost two of the strongest college football programs in the nation then our guys have to move out of state to continue their football career.  I think Mobile should seize this opportunity.  Build a venue to support an NFL team.  Let the jags use it for their games until the school can build its own.  This has tremendous revenue potential.

The Senior Bowl Association IS directly responsible for promoting it you are all exactly correct.  And the location of the Host City plays a huge part in the promotion, hence why they are considering moving it to a much more attracive location.

bobcat - I think that your stance on the leadership is partly true.  However, I think that the host City plays a huge part in media coverage.  I’m willing to bet that if you took the same players and coaches and had the game at the Horseshoe or the Swamp and the media would be all over it.  And the practice facilities would be greatly improved to boot!

And certain areas of Baldwin County are very nice, and certain areas look like crackville. It’s everywhere. Get it?

I think bobcat is right about Mobile being the host city, and the Senior Bowl association itself being responsible for promoting it. Makes sense.

rm - 4 people personally attacking me when I attack nobody personally tells me one thing.  They can’t debate.  I don’t have to like mobile and they don’t have to like the Eastern Shore.  As long as the negativity towards a demographic is within the context and relevent to the debate then there is no need for personal attacks.  Now if I were to pop up on some thread about global wamring and start bashing Mobilians then yes, that would be wrong.  However, any negativity I have cast towards Mobile has always been relevant to the topic.  Instead of defending Mobile, they launch a personal attack.

bobcat - excellent point. The Senior Bowl commission/leadership, etc. needs to step up and do their part to ensure that experience is a positive one for the chosen players. Great debating point!

Mobile is the host city.  It provides a venue, security, transportation and lodging.  I believe they do a pretty good job with the exception of an older stadium (updated).  Now if you’re asking about exposure of the players? That would fall under the responsibilities of the committee and and network that covers the game.  You do realize that would not change if the program moves to another location.  The problems may very well be within the Senior Bowl program and not the hosting city and their troubles will follow them wherever they go until the committee gets their act together themselves.

I went to the UMS Highschool game last Friday night.  The facilities were nice.  Thats a really nice school.  It was my first time there.  Problem is, right accross the street looked like crackville.  That’s the problem with the downtown area.  You have really nice on the same street as really not nice.  This is the problem with Ladd Peoples.
