to be honored by a Montgomery-based school leaders' group.
The School Superintendents of Alabama plans to recognize the
Mobile Democrat as a "Champion of Children" Sunday night during
the group's summer conference in Orange Beach.
Group spokeswoman Lisa Woodard said Figures is the first
lawmaker to receive the award. Figures said in statement she was
"deeply humbled and honored" to receive the award.
Woodard said the group chose Figures because she listens to both
sides, "tries to bridge opposing viewpoints, bring people
together."
Figures sponsored three bills that became law during the 2009
legislative session. Two were related to education.
