Scam Artists Steal Money From Elderly Woman

Alabama Stolen 94-year old Loxley woman says three people posing as contractors forced their way inside her home and stole more than a thousand dollars from her purse

A 94-year old Loxley woman says she was the victim of scam artists posing as contractors. Estelle Hayes tells News 5 three people forced their way inside her home hoping she'd buy linoleum flooring.

"I told them my children don't want a stranger in my house and I don't either and I wished you'd go back out. He said, no, we've got something else to show you."

Hayes says while two of the men rolled out the flooring sample to distract her, another sneaked into her bedroom, found her purse and stole more than a thousand dollars.

"My bedroom is right around there and that cut me off from seeing the one that went into my bedroom so I sat down over there in that chair and I was nervous, Pat, I really was nervous."

Hayes told police the men were driving either a Mercury Grand Marquis or a Ford Crown Victoria. Surveillance video from a nearby gas station captured a similar car just moments after the break-in.

"It's one of the worst things you could do in the public," says Lt. Doug Phillips with the Loxley Police Dept. "This lady is not helpless but she's an easy target."

First off, I want everyone to know that I am Estelle’s Great-Granddaughter. Thanks for all the offers on buying the paint and supplying the manpower. Unfortunately,It rained the day that the painting was scheduled to be done, Which was last Saturday. Everyone in the family wants these you-know-whats to be caught. Please do not make mean comments about my Grandmother. You have to remember, she IS 94 years old. She MAY NOT make all the right decisions of where to keep her money, but PLEASE do not say mean things about her! One person in particular; dougstech!! Do you know this woman PERSONALLY?? I can GUARANTEE you that she is WAY more wiser that you are! You have NO RIGHT to talk about this sweet lady like that! And, She kept her SCREEN door unlocked b/c she was waiting for family to arrive to visit with her! NOBODY, AND I MEAN NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER LIKE THAT!!! SO YOU NEED TO QUIT!

I do bbq catering in Mobile and my wife is part of an organization that does a lot of community work to help people. We would love to help out by coming on the day that they do all of the painting and provide lunch for everyone.

Would that be something that we could help out with? Please let us know.

i read somewhere that some churches and others have the paint and are setting up a time to turn out to paint. if they are short handed i would like to know.

These people probably would be leaving money instead of taking it from here.And here I thought I was the only person to only have $20 in my pocket at most any time.Makes me feel better and richer knowing there’s others out there.
