When George Roussos first began in the restaurant business in 1954, there was no way he could have forecast the storms that the restaurant and his family would face in the years ahead. Now after more than half a century serving diners in the Mobile Bay area, Roussos Restaurant is closing this Sunday.

"This is without a doubt the toughest decision our family has ever made," said John Roussos. "The restaurant isn't a just job to us. It is our way of life."

John, his brother Jimmy and sister Georgia, along with their parents George, who passed in 2000, and Zenia, have welcomed thousands of locals and visitors alike to the different locations of the restaurant.

The original restaurant location on the causeway was destroyed in 1979 by Hurricane Frederick. The family pulled together and later opened in downtown Mobile in the historic Fort Conde area. In 2004 the family joined the development at the Eastern Shore Centre in Spanish Fort. And later in 2008 moved to the current location on Highway 98 in Daphne.

"Our business here in Daphne was very strong until last fall," said Jimmy Roussos. "It is a good location and the area was very supportive. Then the economic downturn really hit us hard, like it has a lot of restaurants."

Also known for their catering, the Roussos family hopes to maintain a presence in that portion of the business. "We are leaving our options open at this time," said Georgia Roussos. "We will continue with our catering and as the economy improves, perhaps we could even reopen the restaurant."

Employees were notified on Wednesday afternoon. "I'm not quite sure what Monday morning will feel like," said Mary Myers. Mary began working for the family in 1974 and has become a fixture, often referred to as the "red-headed Roussos."

"I hope that the business can continue with the catering for now and then grow back strong enough to open the restaurant in the future," Mary added. "When they do, I'll be with them."

The entire Roussos family would like to express their heart-felt appreciation to their employees, vendors and to everyone who has dined with them over the years.

Roussos Restaurant will close its doors at 3:00pm on Sunday, August 23rd.

Great food at great prices equal long lines. I don’t care what the economy is or the location of the restaurant. I’ve seen restaurants in the middle of nowhere, on a gravel road and the wait would be over an hour long. Roussos problem was their food was bland and the prices were too high for the small servings you would receive. I’m sorry for the employee’s loss of their jobs, but the management just didn’t perform and the free market spoke by not coming back to eat.

If anything the comments would help them. Then if they do decide to re-open or open a new place they can make whatever adjustments need to be made. If they re-opened and made no changes and assumed that everyone loved their food and prices, but just could not afford it due to the economy, than the same thing will happen. They will have to close. The whole, do not say anything unless you have something nice to say, is what you do when you kids goldfish dies. Not when you are critiquing and restaurant. I do not see how you can sugarcoat the whole, so-so food and outrageous prices.

No one likes to see others lose their jobs, but it happens every day for a variety of reasons.  Roussos took a big gamble, when they decided to move across the bay.  That gamble didn’t pay off.

Maybe they should look at re-opening the place in Ft. Conde and go after the cruise ship crowd.  If they could do a bang up job with breakfast and lunch, I would think the business would be there.

Then of course, they could always ask Obama for a bailout….

Button… LOL Cry me a river.  It is always bad to see job loss in our community, however, these folks chose to work at a failing restaraunt. As for the Rousso’s, no sympathy.  They failed.  Period.  Nobody to blame but themselves.  The economy excuse is for the birds.  No sympathy here.  Glad they are gone so something better may move in and offer better jobs to our community.

Button,  Roussos closing may have been based in part on the economy, but the failure of the restaurant was caused by a failure of the owners to change their 50s based business model as times changed.  There are numerous seafood restaurants less than 10 minutes away that are always business with a waiting list on weekends.  If Roussos had offered perceived value to justify their prices they might have succeeded.  From the many comments, you can see a pattern of perceived high prices vs small portions.  Businesses close everyday, recession or not, due to poor ownership decisions

The 55 people who lost their job did so through no fault of their own, though the handwriting might have been on the wall with the recent moves of location.

I have chosen not to eat at Roussos for many years due to the high prices.  When I want to spend that much money, I choose Felix’s and never leave unhappy or worse, still hungry.

What kind of comments did you expect to read about a restaurant that had to close?

It’s really sad that you people have to get on the internet to post bad comments about something. Instead you should try the adult thing and say it to the Rousso’s face. Or how about take your head out of your butts and think about the 55 people that lost their jobs and the family that has lost their business and their pride. And in case you haven’t noticed ( I don’t know if your all rich ) but people are losing jobs left and right and it is taking months to be able to find another one. The economy is in shambles and if you can’t realize it, open your own business and when it closes down, get on the internet and read all the negative stuff you did wrong. That really helps lift spirits.

McElroy’s Harbour House was not re-built in Biloxi.  This is a second restaurant in Ocean Springs.  Went by there one day and they were closed (it was an odd day that they close—like a Monday or Tuesday).  Good though!

R&R is across the street from Felix’s.  McElroys is in Ocean Springs on Hwy 90 now its just before going over the bride into Biloxi.

The times I have been to Ed’s I really enjoyed the food and the view from the deck.

Agree about Oysterella’s, but I have only been to the place once.

Oyster House has always been consistent.  Liked the old location better.

What’s R&R?
