After a night of fighting, sheriff's investigators say Jimmy Cowan shot Teresa in the chest, poured gasoline on her and began stacking gasoline soaked furniture cushions on, and around her. When deputies arrived, they say Cowan put the gun down and began to barricade himself in the bedroom with his wife. She picked the gun up and shot him in the head. He later died at U.S.A. Medical Center.
A 911 call brought police to a Rosinton home. Inside Jimmy and Teresa Cowan had been shot.
"It's pitiful, it's terrible." Don Byrd says he has known the couple for years. "I loved them to death, both of them and their children too. He claimed them as his own, he raised them."
Jimmy was shot in the head, Teresa in the chest. The home was barricaded and doused in gasoline.
"Only thing I know is they've been having a lot of trouble and he couldn't take it no more," says Byrd.
This wasn't the first time police had come to the house, they say there was a history of domestic violence issues. Just last week, neighbors say the cops were back again.
"It's rare to see an officer out here. We've seen a few of them in the last week or two down there." Some neighbors may have been shocked by the violence, but not Dave Jones. "Almost didn't surprise me when you are dealing with domestic violence, dousing the house in gasoline that is really disturbing."
Byrd says Cowan came by his house yesterday, "I never thought he'd do something like this."
It was the last time he would see him alive.
Jimmy Cowan had a long criminal history that included an arrest last month for violating a protection order
Teresa Cowan is in a Pensacola hospital, her condition is unknown...
The case will be presented to a grand jury but sheriff's investigators don't believe any charges will be filed.
