Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson is still talking about his giant moon pie. He says his New Year's idea is getting international attention from the media!

Richardson bought the pie with 9-thousand dollars of taxpayer money. Since you are paying for it, we really wanted to see what it looks like.

News 5's Tiffany Craig asked Richardson to show us the pie. He said no. "Do you have a picture? Do you have something? Let the record show that I am not stupid enough to preempt the public. If I show it to them today, they're not coming New Year's Eve. I'm not showing anything to anybody. They gotta come out and see it."

Tiffany pointed out that it was paid with tax dollars. Richardson responded by saying "I pay taxes, yeah. It's my money too!"

We know the 400+ pound pie is being built somewhere in Mobile but city officials won't say where!

Richardson says a real moon pie will also be at the celebration that will rival the current whopper in the Guinness Book of World Records!

I just heard on the radio that not only did Fred pay for a moon pie made out of materials that can’t get wet but that he had taken ads out in over 300 newspapers to promote this D… thing. How much did those ads cost the taxpayers Fred? Yes, you might pay taxes too Fred but you darn sure didn’t pay all $9,000 plus for that pie and etc. Did anyone besides Fred have a vote about spending this money on JUNK?

oh no wkrg, i am so sorry.  anything we can do to help. i am so sorry.

Just now had a chance to skim through the Press Register and I see that WKRG is already feeling the economic crunch.  Sorry to read that several lost their jobs yesterday.

Does the council have to answer to anyone about how funds are spent?  They certainly do not share the expenditures figures with us.  The council obviously is spending money on things that the public is not aware of. If I remember correctly banks and government (i.e. State of Al) has posted in the press-register the balance sheet and profit and loss statements. Shouldn’t our local government disclose the same financial information?

FLOWERCHILD - Yeah, I went to the City’s site looking to see if those discretionary funds were spelled out and started looking at the proposed 2009 budget.  I don’t have a clue what most of it means, but the increases for the city council kind of jumped out.

That money is not broken down either, so there is no way to know how it is to be used and why it needs to be increased by 33% and 55% while other departments only have nominal increases.

WKRG needs to do an expose’ on this city’s budget and how these people have been spending tax payer dollars.

I am here to ask our DA John Tyson to do his job an investigate. The moon pie is one waste, but my concern is the thousands waste on so called travel.

BamaBob - the budget figures you posted earlier - I too am shocked how much the budget has increased. Where is/did the money go? The moon pie is absolutely rediculous. As everyone has stated there are many other needs in our community and in Richardson’s district. I am so glad I do not live in the city. He is so arrogant. Just like the mayor. Is the government going to bail us out when the money is gone and the funds in the budget do not materialize?

You said it best, Sirk. His corruption has not yet come to public view, but hopefully, it will. This man is using tax payers money for his own agenda. Thousands of wasted dollars on a football game…$9000 dollars on a moonpie…I wonder what will be next? Vacations for him that will “benefit” the people here? An expensive car that he “needs” to benefit the people in Mobile? How about a fancy new wardrobe so his appearance will “benefit” the taxpayers? He can justify spending tax dollars anyway he wants because he knows he can get away with it. There are no checks and balances…no accountability for him. I wouldn’t bother calling the mayor either, he and Freddie are like “brothers”. We need outside intervention on this one. State Government needs to know whats going on and some type of inquiry needs to commence…perhaps an investigation.

I think Richardson just wants attention.  I hope they find out he is corrupt and when they do, they can send him to jail and bubba will give him all the attention he could ever want.

I dont understand what made this council man decide to spend nine thousand dollars of tax money on a moonpie when this country is in bad economical health.  I personally think that it is a selfish, and rediculas thing to spend our money on at time like this!  I thought that our councilmen were in the possition that they are in to help the well being of the city or county.  So can anyone tell me how this moonpie is going to help our county in this time of need?
