People across the Gulf Coast are mourning the loss of a man they spent their mornings with for nearly a decade.

Ray Ray Russell hosted the morning show on The Big Station, 93 BLX for nearly 10 years. He died Friday morning from congestive heart failure.

"He's truly gonna be missed," said Vinny Duncan, Promotions Director for Cumulus Broadcasting Mobile. "Ray like to celebrate life and liked the funness out of life. That's basically what he wanted to be remembered as."

Russell left the station in 2006 to become a manager for his nephew, Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell.

Ray Ray Russell was 42 years old.

I’m really sad to hear this news!!!
Ray Ray, Ricky Smiley, JB Smooth, Mitch Henry and I had great times putting on comedy shows back in the day at the Kessler NCO club.  Ray took me in, taught me alot and helped me build my business.  This is typical of the type of person he was.  I appreciate him and want to credit him for my success.  We are really gonna miss him in this world.  My condolences to his family and all his loyal fans and friends.  He will be missed but forever remembered.

RAY RAY WAS A CLASS ACT! A MAN OF HIS WORD,I AM PROUD TO CALL HIM A FRIEND.HE WILL TRULY BE MISSED!RAY RAY WAS ALWAYS THERE TO HELP WITH ANY CHARITY.I HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH RAY OVER THE YEARS AS HE AND JAMARCUS DID EVENTS FOR US AT THE JEREMIAH CASTILLE FOUNDATION.GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY! WE MISS YOU RAY!

so sad

Ray Ray was a dear close friend. As a DJ at Star 104, he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. He always kept up with me and made sure I was doing well. He supported me in everything I did in and out of radio. He always would call and we would talk about my favorite topic. JaMarcus. I was a die hard LSU and Raider fan long before JR played and Ray would kid with me about it because he was a Tenn fan at the time. Once
J-Roc made it to LSU & Oakland, he never failed to call me and keep me up to date. He didnt have to but he knew what it meant to me. He made me feel like part of his family and I will never forget the great friend I had in Ray Ray. He will be missed by many and his great deeds will have impacts in many places. But right now, my heart is broke. I loved that big guy. Rest in Peace Ray Ray. I will never forget you….Rod Cochran.

Rest on my brother, you fought the good fight. My prayers for the family. A good man passed on and not by another man’s hand as we are so accustomed to here in Mobile, Al.

Dog!!!I thought missing his voice on the radio was bad enough, Know that his presences on the Gulf Coast will be missed. And we in PENSACOLA loved him too…My condelences goes out to his family and to The whole Gulf Coast family, Ray Russell was one of our local celebrities….
God Bless

Thats just wayyyy too young to die, I listened to him on the radio on my way to school every morning. I remember one time, i dont know if it was him, but he had a 3 yr old nephew that had flushed his pen down the toilet, and his sister made the kid call him on the air and apologize, just the exchange between the two was heartwarming, he said that he couldnt be mad at him because he loved him too much. This was a loving and caring man. My prayers go out to his family.

A very entertaining man. I watched hundreds of school children thrilled by him. I know they will all miss him.

Sign your donor cars people. You never know when that Rice’s potato chip truck may be near.

My prayers go out to the Russell family. May God continue to bless and strength you. I was a big fan of the Ray Ray morning show.  Ms. Essie was my favorite!!!  I remember talking with Ray Ray at the 1st annual JaMarcus Russellfootball camp with my son.  My kids remember him as the “pop sickle man” that.  He was walking around making sure everyone stayed cool while attending the camp.  God makes no mistakes, he has called one of his precious angels home.  Just continue to look to the Lord for your strength.

Never heard of the dude. But sad story nevertheless. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP.
