“I thank-you all for your support and I really appreciate everything you've done for me,” said Thomas addressing the crowd.
The normally silent Thomas did say a few words during the rally, but didn't touch on the charges against him.
“There are 3 things I think are important in my life and yours, that's faith, family and friends, thank you,” said Thomas as he ended his remarks to cheers from the crowd. Others at the rally came to defend Thomas and criticize the justice system.
“He has been a role model for our young mens he has done everything I think a judge should do to build Mobile up,” says Thomas supporter Lorna Woods. While most of the people here came to support the former Mobile County judge organizers say their rally goes beyond just one case
“Our justice system here in Mobile is on a crash course to hell,” said Mobile NAACP President Jimmie Gardner during the rally. Gardner says he's turning a critical eye to several high profile court cases.
“Bishop Sate along with the David Thomas situation along with the Harris twin girls that was students at Murphy High School,” says Gardner. He's calling for volunteers to monitor court proceedings and wants people to know they'll be watching.
“We're going to be vigilant in your courtroom and at the end of the day we're going to have some determinations of what's happening in our court system,” says Gardner.
Another meeting is slated for this Wednesday to help with Thomas's legal defense fund. Thomas stepped down from the bench in 2007 amid allegations of using his office to help a family member and allegedly paddling prisoners from the Mobile Metro jail. Calls to Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. for comment were not returned.
